Connecting PI's MCP to ChatGPT

This article applies to client-side IT administrators and technical sponsors responsible for enabling PI's MCP connector during the current Pre Beta phase.

Learn how to enable the Predictive Index MCP connector for your organization, and get PI-powered behavioral intelligence right in ChatGPT.

Note: Before proceeding, ensure you've achieved the PI-specific prerequisites for enabling the MCP.

Who can add the connector to ChatGPT?

An admin or owner completes the first 2 stages, either on web or desktop (not mobile). Each member then connects individually.

Note: The naming that ChatGPT uses for connectors varies by role. Admins manage the connector as an "App," while members find and install it from the "Plugins" directory. Both refer to the same thing.

How to connect PI's MCP to Copilot

Note: ChatGPT's menu labels and navigation flows are subject to change over time. If a label in the steps below does not match what you see in ChatGPT, please refer to our host-agnostic steps for general guidance.

Step 1: Create the app (admin)

  1. Turn on Developer mode in your workspace settings, under Apps → Advanced settings or under Security and login. If neither is present, the MCP is not available on your tenant.

  2. In Workspace settings → Apps, create a new app. Enter the name (e.g., "Obi by PI"), a description, and the Server URL: https://mcp.predictiveindex.com/mcp.

  3. Choose OAuth, scan the tool list, check it against the "How the Predictive Index MCP works" section of this article, and create the app.

  4. Confirm Obi by PI appears under Drafts, labeled "Dev."

Note: This draft is invisible to users until you publish it.

Step 2: Publish and scope it (admin)

  1. In Drafts, select "Obi by PI → Publish" and acknowledge the security notice. (The draft will move to "Enabled.")

  2. From the app’s menu, open Action control and select the read-only options. (ChatGPT treats a tool as a write action unless it is explicitly annotated as read-only; this does not change what the connector can actually do, which is read-only in all cases.)

    Note: If Obi returns nothing after this configuration, switch to allow all actions and contact our Product Manager, Stefano Hernandez, at [email protected] for additional support.

  3. From the same menu, open User access and assign the roles or groups that should get Obi.

  4. On Enterprise and Edu plans, grant those roles developer-mode access under "Permissions & Roles," or the member step below will fail. On Business plans, only admins and owners should have that access.

  5. When PI adds or renames a tool, select "Refresh" on the app’s detail page. Changes do not propagate automatically.

Step 3: Connect and use it (each user)

  1. Confirm developer mode is on in your settings. If it is absent, ask your admin.

  2. In Settings → Plugins, find Obi by PI and select "Connect," unless it already reads as "Installed."

  3. Sign in with your PI account and approve the consent screen.

  4. In a conversation, open the composer + menu, find the developer-mode section, and switch Obi by PI on.
