What is Obi by The Predictive Index?

Obi puts personalized behavioral intelligence at your fingertips, ahead of any conversation. Obi runs on a private AI model rooted in 70+ years of PI science and assessments. Think of it as a natural extension of your PI expertise.

Use Obi to help prepare for conversations where behavioral intelligence is pivotal, such as new hire onboarding, a recurring 1:1, or a difficult performance conversation. Provide Obi with a specific problem and some real-world context, and watch as it gives you personalized advice based on your prompt.

In addition to behavioral intelligence, Obi also helps with automating admin tasks in the PI software, such as sending assessments or downloading reports.

Tip: Not sure what to ask Obi? Click here for some starter prompts.

How to access Obi

  1. Log in to the PI software.

  2. Click the “Ask Obi” button in the top-right corner.

  3. Obi will open as a side panel.

Tip: Obi will stay open as you navigate the software. As you hop around pages (or products), it will automatically consider the context of the current page and provide tailored "Quick start" options based on your experience.

What behavioral intelligence requests does Obi support?

Provide Obi with a scenario, problem, or goal of yours, and it'll provide behavioral intelligence that is personalized to that context.

The number of prompts you can give Obi is countless, but here are some great examples you can use as a starting point:

Understanding yourself

  • "What does my PI Behavioral Pattern say about my natural leadership style?"

  • "My manager gave me [XYZ] areas for improvement. How should I approach those areas based on my PI Behavioral Pattern?"

Understanding others

  • "Give me a 30/60/90 day coaching plan for @[EMPLOYEE NAME]."

  • "Create a 90-day new hire onboarding plan for @[EMPLOYEE NAME] that sets them up for success."

Relationships & conflict

  • "How do I 'manage up' with @[MANAGER NAME]?"

  • "What are tips for managing @[DIRECT REPORT NAME]?"

  • "I'm struggling to work with @[EMPLOYEE A] based on [XYZ] factors. What next steps should I take?"

  • "@[EMPLOYEE A] and @[EMPLOYEE B] are having [XYZ] issues. How do I help improve their working relationship?"

Coaching & feedback

  • "I need to have a difficult conversation with @[EMPLOYEE NAME] based on [XYZ] factors. How should I deliver that feedback?"

  • "How does @[EMPLOYEE NAME] like to receive feedback, based on their PI Behavioral Pattern?"

Communication

  • "How can I tailor [X] message to @[EMPLOYEE NAME]?"

  • "What communication tips should I keep in mind before meeting with @[EMPLOYEE NAME]?"

Team dynamics

What automation requests does Obi support?

Obi helps cut down on admin work by automating common actions and requests in the PI software.

With Obi, you can accomplish the following automation requests (and more):

Jobs & candidates

  • Look up jobs and candidates (e.g., "Show a list of all jobs I have access to.")

  • View Job Targets (e.g., "Show me the graph for @[JOB NAME] job.")

  • See how candidates compare to a Job Target (e.g., "Show an overlay graph between @[CANDIDATE NAME] and @[JOB NAME].")

Note: Job permissions apply to Obi. Only Hire users with access to a job can retrieve data about the role and its associated candidates.

Employee assessments

  • Send Behavioral Assessments to existing employees in your system (e.g., "Send the Behavioral Assessment to @[PERSON NAME].")

  • Access the employee assessment link for your organization (e.g., "What's my organization's employee assessment link?")

  • Look up an employee's Behavioral Pattern (e.g., "Get Behavioral Pattern for @[EMPLOYEE NAME].")

Tip: Obi supports bulk actions. For instance, you can say "Get the Behavioral Pattern for [MANAGER NAME] and their direct reports" and Obi will output all of them at once.

Employee reports

  • View, download, or email the following employee reports:

    • Behavioral Report

    • Placard (PDF download/email only)

    • Personal Development Guide

    • Management Skills Guide

    • Self-Concept

    • Management Tips

    • Management Strategy Guide (PDF download/email only)

Examples:

  • "Email the Behavioral Reports for @[EMPLOYEE A], @[EMPLOYEE B], and @[EMPLOYEE C] to @[MANAGER NAME]."

  • "Download Placards for @[MANAGER NAME] and their direct reports."

  • "View my Self-Concept graph."

Exception: Currently, all Inspire reports can be viewed from Obi except for the Coaching Guide. Learn how to access the Coaching Guide.

Relationship Guides

  • View, download, or email Relationship Guides in bulk (e.g., "Create Relationship Guides for the entire @[TEAM NAME] team.")

FAQs

General questions

How was Obi built? How is it different from other AI models?

Our AI is built specifically for PI. We currently instruction-train a private model using ChatGPT, and may use multiple models or change providers over time based on its performance.

Our model is different from third-party models in 3 critical ways:

  1. We instruction-train it. ChatGPT uses the general internet; our AI only uses sources that incorporate our validated PI science.

  2. It's rubric-verified. The AI must follow PI methodology and logic, so you get reliable guidance validated by experts. (That said, AI can make mistakes, so always review answers for accuracy.)

  3. Your data stays private. Existing PI product permissions are respected, plus your information is never used to train the external third-party AI models or shared externally.

What LLM model(s) does Obi use?

Obi is built on OpenAI's family of AI models. However, our version is a self-contained instance, allowing for greater PI personalization and better guardrails than open-ended ChatGPT models.

Can I prompt Obi without specific names?

Yes. Obi is trained on your organization's structure based on any manager and department data that's been set in Administration. (To update this data, upload a fresh organization file.)

Assuming up-to-date data, Obi can discern:

  • "Me" / "my" (will present your data)

  • "My manager" (will present your manager's data)

  • "My peer" / "my teammate" (will present your immediate team's data)

  • "My direct reports" (will present your direct reports' data)

  • "The [NAME] department" (will present data for any employee with that department name)

Tip: You can mix-and-match these terms. For instance, you can ask Obi to create Relationship Guides for all of your manager's direct reports.

How can I try Obi while its in open beta?

Obi is available to all clients as part of this open beta. However, you will only see Obi if your organization admin has enabled it for your organization.

Is Obi different than Fin?

Yes. Fin is our AI-powered support agent, which is a separate tool than Obi.

Please use Fin when:

  • You can't find or access a specific PI software feature ("Why can I find the Coaching Guide?").

  • You want to understand how a particular PI feature works ("How do I build a collaborative Job Target?").

  • You're encountering a bug, white screen, or another technical issue ("I'm getting an error message when performing an org upload").

  • You need general troubleshooting support ("How do I fix [XYZ] issue?").

Please use Obi when:

  • You want to send or pull specific PI data (e.g., "Send [EMPLOYEE NAME] the Behavioral Assessment," "Download [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Behavioral Report").

  • You need help interpreting BA results or other PI science (e.g., "How do I solve conflict between a Maverick and a Guardian?").

  • You want to automate administrative tasks (e.g., "Bulk-download Relationship Guides for the entire sales team").

Note: Both Obi and Fin are trained on a similar glossary of key PI terms. While not every definition will match 1-to-1, we are continually improving our shared knowledge to make for a cohesive user experience.

Getting started

What are some good Obi starter prompts?

Try asking Obi any of the following:

Inspire (employees)

  • How can I adapt my communication style for more efficient conversations with my manager?

  • I have a team meeting with my peers in a few minutes. Can you give me a refresher on everyone's Behavioral Patterns?

  • Help me prepare for a series of check-ins with each of my direct reports this week. Create a plan for each of my direct reports based on their behavioral pattern.

  • Show me my Behavioral Pattern graph.

  • Show my Self (or Self-Concept) graph.

  • Show a Relationship Guide graph between [EMPLOYEE A] and [EMPLOYEE B]

  • Generate a Relationship Guide for me and my manager.

  • I have a 1:1 with [EMPLOYEE NAME] today. What should I focus on?

  • Email me my direct reports' Behavioral Reports.

  • I need to communicate the following message to [EMPLOYEE NAME]. Help me tailor the message based on their Behavioral Pattern. [PASTE YOUR MESSAGE]

  • Download [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Placard. (You can also try this with the Personal Development Guide, Management Skills Guide, Self-Concept report, Management Tips or Management Strategy Guide.)

Hire (jobs & candidate)

  • What is the Behavioral Target for [JOB NAME]? (Note: You must have access to PI Hire and the job you are asking about to get an answer.)

  • What strengths and caution areas does [CANDIDATE NAME]'s Behavioral Pattern suggest for their position? (Note: You must have access to PI Hire and the candidate you are asking about to get an answer.)

Obi settings

It is possible to disable/enable Obi?

Yes, organization admins can disable/enable Obi at any time.

To do so:

  1. Log in to the PI software.

  2. Select the gear icon in the top-right corner.

  3. Click "Organization Settings" tab.

  4. Click "AI Settings" on the left-hand side.

  5. Disable (or enable) the checkbox titled "Enable Obi for this organization."

  6. Hit "Save Changes" to confirm.

  7. Obi will be disabled (or re-enabled).

Note: This is an organization-wide setting. If enabled, all employees with PI user accounts will have access to Obi. Likewise, if disabled, all employees (including admins) will lose access to it unless re-enabled.

Data privacy & security

What data does Obi collect? How is that information used?

For information on what data Obi collects and how it uses it, please visit this FAQ article.

Can anyone at my organization see the prompts I share with Obi?

No. The conversations you have with Obi are private to you; no one else at your organization can access or monitor that data.

Note: The PI product team has access to users' prompt data. This data is treated with the utmost confidentiality and is used for Obi model improvements only. It is never shared or made publicly available.
