Retaking the Self-Concept

Learn how to retake the Self-Concept (or readminister to a co-worker), and get updated behavioral insights about how you feel in your current role.

This article applies to Inspire users with permission to send assessments in the PI2 platform.

Have your job responsibilities changed considerably since the last time you took the PI Behavioral Assessment? You can retake (or readminister) the Self-Concept at any time in Inspire or via Obi.

Note: Want to retake/readminister the Self and the Self-Concept? Learn how to do so here.

Why retake the Self-Concept?

When a person takes the Behavioral Assessment, they are asked to complete 2 questions:

  1. Self-Concept: "Please read the words in the list below and check those that you feel describe the way you are expected to act by others at work."

  2. Self: "Please read the words in the list below and check those that you feel really describe you as you are at work."

Our science shows that the Self tends to be stable for a period of 6-8 years. The Self-Concept, by contrast, is a point-in-time snapshot of how a person feels in their current role. As the role and its responsibilities evolve, the Self-Concept inevitably becomes outdated.

If you feel your role has evolved since the last time you took the BA, it may be beneficial to retake the Self-Concept. Doing so allows you and your manager to have a candidate conversation about your behavioral drives, and how those drives compare to how you're currently feeling in the role. If there's misalignment, it may be a sign to revisit the needs of the role, or to discuss strategies to "flex" your behaviors to meet those needs.

How to retake (or readminister) the Self-Concept

  1. Log in to the PI software.

  2. Select Inspire from the top navigation bar.

  3. Search for an employee (either yourself or a co-worker).

  4. You will land on that employee's About page.

  5. Click "Self-Concept" on the left-hand side.

  6. Click the button titled "Retake Self-Concept." (You must have permission in Inspire to "send assessments to co-workers," or else this button will not appear.)

  7. A pop-up will appear with education on when to send a Self-Concept retake, and an explanation that only the employee's Self-Concept pattern will be updated, not their Self.

  8. Click "Send retake" to confirm.

  9. An email will be sent to the employee's inbox, inviting them to retake the Self-Concept.

How to view different Self-Concepts for an employee

  1. Once the employee retakes the Self-Concept, navigate back to their page in Inspire.

  2. Click the dropdown menu next to the word "Self-Concept."

  3. Select the date of the Self-Concept you would like to view for this employee.

  4. The Self-Concept page will update to show the relevant Self-Concept data.

Important: Unlike multiple versions of the Self, which can be toggled between and set as "active" via Administration, the Self-Concept always defaults to the latest version when you navigate to the page in Inspire (or prompt Obi for it).

How to bulk-send Self-Concept retakes

Inspire admins can also bulk-send Self-Concept retakes to employees.

From the Inspire homepage:

  1. Click the "Employees" tab.

  2. Select the employees to whom you'd like to send a Self-Concept retake.

  3. Click the "Actions" dropdown.

  4. Hit "Retake Self-Concept" from the available options.

  5. A pop-up will appear with education on when to send a Self-Concept retake, and an explanation that only the employees' Self-Concept pattern will be updated, not their Self.

  6. Click "Send retake" to confirm.

  7. The selected employees will receive an email inviting them to retake the Self-Concept.

What Self-Concept prompts can Obi help with?

Obi supports the following prompts related to the Self-Concept:

  • "Retrieve [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Self-Concept graph"

  • "Download [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Self-Concept report"

  • "Help me interpret [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Self-Concept"

  • "Send/resend a Self-Concept retake to [EMPLOYEE NAME]"

FAQs

I don't see the "Retake Self-Concept" button (or it's greyed out). Why?

To retake/readminister the Self-Concept, you must either be an admin or be a limited user with the ability to send assessments to co-workers in Inspire. If you don't see the button or it's greyed out, it likely means you do not have the right permission level.

To gain access, request that an admin either grant you permission to send assessments in Inspire or make you an admin.

I don't see a bulk-action option to send Self-Concept retakes. Why?

Only admins can bulk-send Self-Concept retakes. If you can access the Employees tab in Inspire but don't see a bulk-action option to send Self-Concept retakes, it's likely you are not an admin. In this case, request that an existing admin make you an admin as well.

Can I readminister the Self-Concept from Administration?

Yes. If you readminister the Behavioral Assessment from the "Manage assessment" panel in Administration, the employee will be prompted to retake both the Self and the Self-Concept. The new Self-Concept can be viewed in Inspire or viewed in Obi.

Is it possible to readminister the Self-Concept to a candidate?

No. It is not possible to readminister just the Self-Concept to a candidate. Instead, you can invite the candidate to retake the Behavioral Assessment via candidate assessment link. As part of the assessment, they will retake both the Self and the Self-Concept.

Note: Users cannot currently switch between active Selfs/Self-Concepts for a candidate in Hire. Instead, please reach out to PI Support to request the latest BA results be set as "active" for this candidate.
