Need help getting started? Learn how to make the most of the PI Assistant in this article.

Note: The PI Assistant is still in early beta. We plan to make regular changes and updates to the assistant on the road to its full release. As with any AI tool, please always check for accuracy.

Important: The PI Assistant is not designed to help with software issues or technical support. Learn how to get PI software support.

What is the PI Assistant?

The PI Assistant is an AI-powered tool that lets users leverage PI data faster and more effectively than ever. While the architecture of the PI Assistant is based on OpenAI’s family of large language models, its actual content is rooted in PI’s science and assessments. Think of it as a self-learning PI expert that is personalized to you and your organization’s needs.

Use the PI Assistant to help automate admin tasks, such as sending assessments or downloading reports. Or, provide the assistant with a specific problem and some real-world context, and watch as it gives you personalized advice based on your prompt.

How to access the PI Assistant

  1. Log in to the PI software.

  2. Click the “PI Assistant” button in the top-right corner.

  3. You will land on the PI Assistant page.

What commands does the PI Assistant support?

The PI Assistant can answer and act on requests at a scale that wasn’t possible with previous iterations of our software.

With the assistant, you can accomplish the following (and more):

Jobs & candidates

  • Look up jobs and candidates (e.g., "Show a list of all jobs I have access to.")

  • View Job Targets (e.g., "Show me the graph for [JOB NAME] job.")

  • See how candidates compare to a Job Target (e.g., "Show an overlay graph between [CANDIDATE NAME] and [JOB NAME].")

Note: Job permissions apply to the PI Assistant. Only Hire users with access to a job can retrieve data about the role and its associated candidates.

Employee assessments

  • Send Behavioral Assessments to existing employees in your system (e.g., "Send the Behavioral Assessment to @[PERSON NAME].")

  • Access the employee assessment link for your organization (e.g., "What's my organization's employee assessment link?")

  • Look up an employee's Behavioral Pattern (e.g., "Get Behavioral Pattern for @[EMPLOYEE NAME].")

Tip: The PI Assistant supports bulk actions. For instance, you can say "Get the Behavioral Pattern for [MANAGER NAME] and their direct reports" and the assistant will output all of them at once.

Employee reports

  • View, download, or email the following employee reports:

    • Behavioral Report

    • Placard (PDF download/email only)

    • Personal Development Guide

    • Management Skills Guide

    • Self-Concept

    • Management Tips

    • Management Strategy Guide (PDF download/email only)

Examples:

  • "Email the Behavioral Reports for [EMPLOYEE A], [EMPLOYEE B], and [EMPLOYEE C] to [MANAGER NAME]."

  • "Download Placards for [MANAGER NAME] and their direct reports."

  • "View my Self-Concept graph."

Exception: Currently, all Inspire reports can be viewed from the PI Assistant except for the Coaching Guide. Learn how to access the Coaching Guide.

Relationship Guides & contextual tips

  • View, download, or email Relationship Guides in bulk (e.g., "Create Relationship Guides for the entire Sales team.")

  • Get tips to improve a relationship based on a real-life prompt (e.g., "[EMPLOYEE A] and [EMPLOYEE B] are struggling to communicate. Give me some best practices I can share with them.")

Navigating the PI Assistant page

The PI Assistant page includes the following quality-of-life features:

Chat history

Start a new chat in the top-right corner, and whatever you discuss with the assistant will be preserved so you can refer back to it later.

Search for and select between recent chats on the left-hand side of the page.

File attachments

The PI Assistant can parse PDFs and other file formats. Feel free to upload resources (e.g., a job description, a presentation slide, etc.) and get tips on how to personalize it using behavioral data.

Quick start prompts

Not sure where to start with the assistant? Select a quick start prompt to auto-populate a prompt, which you can then modify to your liking before submitting.

Feedback options

Have feedback about information that the PI Assistant shared? Let us know by hitting the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" buttons at the bottom of the assistant's output.

Once you click a feedback option, you'll be prompted to share a bit more about why the output worked well (or didn't work well).

There's so much more you can accomplish with the PI Assistant, and we're excited for you to try it out for yourself.

If you have feedback, please be sure to use the "Thumbs up" and Thumbs down" buttons within the experience so we can fine-tune the feature further during this beta period.

FAQs

General questions

How was the PI Assistant developed?

The PI Assistant was a joint effort between PI's product, engineering, and science teams. Since fall 2025, these teams have collaborated to develop a model (based on OpenAI's ChatGPT architecture) that incorporates PI's science, software, and assessments.

Once the model was built, these teams began stress-testing results internally, working to ensure high accuracy of outputs. Learn more about how we use AI at PI.

What LLM model(s) does the PI Assistant use?

The PI Assistant is built on OpenAI's family of AI models. However, our version is a self-contained instance, allowing for greater PI personalization and better guardrails than open-ended ChatGPT models.

Can I prompt the PI Assistant without specific names?

Yes. The PI Assistant is trained on your organization's structure based on any manager and department data that's been set in Administration. (To update this data, upload a fresh organization file.)

Assuming up-to-date data, the PI Assistant can discern:

  • "Me" / "my" (will present your data)

  • "My manager" (will present your manager's data)

  • "My peer" / "my teammate" (will present your immediate team's data)

  • "My direct reports" (will present your direct reports' data)

  • "The [NAME] department" (will present data for any employee with that department name)

Tip: You can mix-and-match these terms. For instance, you can ask the PI Assistant to create Relationship Guides for all of your manager's direct reports.

Is the PI Assistant different than Fin?

Yes. Fin is our AI-powered support agent, which is a separate tool than the PI Assistant.

Please use Fin when:

  • You can't find or access a specific PI software feature ("Why can I find the Coaching Guide?").

  • You want to understand how a particular PI feature works ("How do I build a collaborative Job Target?").

  • You're encountering a bug, white screen, or another technical issue ("I'm getting an error message when performing an org upload").

  • You need general troubleshooting support ("How do I fix [XYZ] issue?").

Please use the PI Assistant when:

  • You want to send or pull specific PI data (e.g., "Send [EMPLOYEE NAME] the Behavioral Assessment," "Download [EMPLOYEE NAME]'s Behavioral Report").

  • You need help interpreting BA results or other PI science (e.g., "How do I solve conflict between a Maverick and a Guardian?").

  • You want to automate administrative tasks (e.g., "Bulk-download Relationship Guides for the entire sales team").

Note: Both the PI Assistant and Fin are trained on a similar glossary of key PI terms. While not every definition will match 1-to-1, we are continually improving our shared knowledge to make for a cohesive user experience.

  • Generate a Relationship Guide for me and my manager.

  • I have a 1:1 with [EMPLOYEE NAME] today. What should I focus on?

  • Email me my direct reports' Behavioral Reports.

  • I need to communicate the following message to [EMPLOYEE NAME]. Help me tailor the message based on their Behavioral Pattern. [PASTE YOUR MESSAGE]
